Ceiling Installation to Serve as a Symbolic Centerpiece of the New Hawaii Prince Hotel Waikiki
CEILING INSTALLATION TO SERVE AS A SYMBOLIC CENTERPIECE OF THE NEW HAWAII PRINCE HOTEL WAIKIKI
Award-winning local artist Kaili Chun shares the many meanings behind “Hulali i ka la”
HONOLULU, HI – Over 800 pieces of shimmering copper individually hammered by employees, their families and longtime guests of Hawaii Prince Hotel Waikiki will soon flow through the new hotel lobby, scheduled to be unveiled mid-December 2016.
In collaboration with Hawaii Prince Hotel Waikiki, currently undergoing an extensive $55.4 million transformation, and G70 (formerly Group 70 International), acclaimed Hawaii-based artist Kaili Chun designed the ceiling installation based on the hotel’s new brand story and area’s heritage as a prominent gathering place. Named Hulali i ka la, meaning “glistening in the sun,” the copper plates, suspended by steel cables, represent the belly fin of the Hinana fish, which used to inhabit the former Piinaio Stream. The configuration of the installation and gentle movement of each piece aims to bring the rich history of the hotel’s Waikiki location back to life.
“I’m so proud to be a part of this project that honors the land and our ancestors,” said Kaili Chun. “The many layers of meaning are especially significant given the many helping hands of each employee and their families sharing their aloha.”
The hotel hosted a number of hammering sessions where partners, employees and their families embraced the opportunity to make their mark on a new chapter for Hawaii Prince. Each participant embossed their name and message on their copper plate and received a card noting the exact location it will be placed amongst the 800 pieces.
Hulali i ka la will be a featured piece for the upcoming Honolulu Biennial next spring.
Sculptor and installation artist Kaili Chun’s diverse training includes receiving her bachelors degree in architecture from Princeton University; a Master of Fine Arts from the University of Hawaii at Manoa; and an apprenticeship with master canoe builder and woodworker Wright Elemakule Bowman, Sr. She is currently pursing a doctorate in architecture at the University of Hawaii at Manoa.
In her work, she often constructs narratives through symbols and objects that address the impact of historical events on the present day. Organic elements are sometimes included in her pieces, and the changes they undergo during the course of an exhibition metaphorically reference the nature of culture as an evolutionary process.
Chun has received a number of significant visual art awards including a Painting and Sculpture Grant from the Joan Mitchell Foundation in New York City, New York, and a fellowship from the Native Arts and Cultures Foundation in Vancouver, Washington. Her work is included in private and institutional collections in Hawaii, the continental U.S. and Germany.
