Celebrating Sustainability at Prince Waikiki
October 16, 2025

In Hawaii, sustainability isn’t a seasonal trend—it’s a deeply rooted way of life. As World Sustainability Day approaches on October 29th, it’s a perfect opportunity to reflect, reconnect, and recommit to treading lightly on the Earth.

At Prince Waikiki, World Sustainability Day resonates with us and our commitment to the spirit of mālama. This Hawaiian term, meaning “to take care of,” embodies our dedication to the lands, culture, and people of our islands. From ocean to plate, rooftop garden to reef, our commitment to mālama runs deep.

For travelers who value conscious exploration and meaningful connection, here’s how to experience World Sustainability Day the Prince Waikiki way.

The Prince Green Initiative: Mālama from the Ground Up

World Sustainability Day offers the perfect opportunity to learn more about our Prince Green Initiative. Through this sustainability plan, we’ve reduced waste, partnered with local businesses to source products, and developed new approaches that have helped us reimagine what it means to be a modern hotel.

Here’s how our sustainability ethos comes to life:

  • Refillable bath amenities in each room that eliminated the use of over 240,000 single-use plastic bottles annually
  • Path Water aluminum bottles and hydration stations throughout the property that eliminated the use of over 300,000 single-use plastic bottles annually
  • EV charging stations in our self-parking garage
  • Biki Bikes and Go X electric scooters available on-property make it easy to explore the neighborhood at a relaxed, sustainable pace
  • A zero food waste program that ensures unused and untouched food is redistributed to those in need, while any food waste that remains is donated to local farms

As a certified Hawaii Green Business, our commitment reflects a deeper dedication to operational sustainability while ensuring Prince Waikiki leaves a lighter footprint, all without compromising comfort.

Aquaponics and Island-Inspired Dining

From the ground up — literally on our rooftop — Prince Waikiki’s aquaponics garden is the foundation of our fresh, innovative culinary experiences. Here, lettuce, lilikoi, edible flowers, garlic chives, chili peppers, yuzu, and more are cultivated to support our zero-waste kitchen.

Guests can savor these hyper-local ingredients in dishes from our ever-evolving menu at 100 Sails Restaurant & Bar.

A Sustainable Stay That Gives Back

Prince Waikiki is proud to support Sustainable Coastlines Hawaii, a local nonprofit inspiring better consumer habits and hands-on environmental stewardship through beach cleanups, education, and community outreach. By helping to keep Oʻahu’s waterways clean and coastlines free of debris, this initiative protects native flora and marine life while supporting the overall health of our island ecosystem.

Essentials, Sustainably Reimagined

From the moment you check in at Prince Waikiki, you’ll find sustainable style is second nature. Your stay begins with a thoughtful touch: a reusable Prince Waikiki tote. A stylish essential, it’s ideal for a beach day or leisurely market stroll — helping reduce single-use plastic with ease.

Exploring Oʻahu, Sustainably

Here on Oʻahu, there are endless ways to explore thoughtfully while connecting with the island on a deeper level. Across Oʻahu, you’ll find five botanical gardens, including:

You can also try your hand at a reef-safe snorkeling tour in Hanauma Bay Nature Preserve to learn more about the work being done to protect delicate coral ecosystems.

Prince Tip: Book in advance — only 1,400 guests are allowed in the preserve each day, and reef-safe sunscreen is required.
