Bringing Hawaii’s History to the Screen
Set during a turning point in Hawaiian royal history, Chief of War tells the story of four warring island kingdoms — Hawai‘i Island, Maui, O‘ahu, and Kaua‘i. The series follows the unification of these kingdoms under Kamehameha I, the legendary chief who brought the islands together as one.
With cultural advisors guiding every detail, the series offers an immersive window into the past. It features ʻŌlelo Hawa’i (the Hawaiian language) and authentic elements of traditional culture, including sacred temples, martial arts, and ancient ceremonies. As co-creator Thomas Pa‘a Sibbett explained in an interview with Travel + Leisure, the series was created to help audiences “see Hawaii in a different light,” and to encourage more authentic, meaningful connections with the islands.

ʻIolani Palace: The Heart of Hawaii’s Royal Legacy

Just a short drive from Prince Waikiki, ʻIolani Palace is one of Hawaii’s most cherished landmarks and the only official royal residence in the United States. Built in 1882 by King Kalākaua, it was once home to the Hawaiian Kingdom’s final monarchs, King Kalākaua and Queen Liliʻuokalani. Today, it remains a symbol of Hawaiian independence and cultural pride.
Prince Waikiki Tip: While you’re there, visit the King Kamehameha Statue just across the street, then take a short walk to historic Kawaiahaʻo Church and the Hawaii State Capitol to round out your royal tour of Honolulu!
Bishop Museum: A Deep Dive into the Pacific Past

Bishop Museum provides a deeper look at the islands’ cultural roots. Founded in 1889, it is home to the world’s most extensive collection of Hawaiian and Pacific cultural artifacts. Many of these pieces are connected to the same era depicted in the show. Visitors can see extraordinary objects such as feather capes (‘ahu ‘ula), feather helmets (mahiole), and feather lei (lei hulu).
The museum also played a role in bringing the series to life. Marques Hanalei Marzan, a cultural advisor at Bishop Museum, served as a consultant on Chief of War, helping ensure the show’s costumes and cultural details reflected historical authenticity.
Honolulu Museum of Art: Island Identity Through an Artistic Lens

A visit to the Honolulu Museum of Art (HoMA) offers a different perspective on Hawaii’s story through creativity and expression. Just a short drive from Prince Waikiki, HoMA features an impressive collection of more than 50,000 works spanning cultures and centuries, including traditional and contemporary Native Hawaiian art.
