Best Craft Breweries Near Prince Waikiki
There are only 18 craft breweries in the state of Hawaii with a handful of others currently in the works. Many guests who escape to Honolulu live in large “beer cities” such as Boston, Portland, Denver, Seattle, and San Diego. Tourists visit Honolulu to get away from their tiresome daily routines, relax in supreme luxury, and explore Oahu’s breathtaking natural wilderness, but they also crave a pint-sized slice of home. Our state may not boast a massive craft beer scene, but Prince Waikiki is within two miles of three of the best craft breweries in Hawaii. When you’re not exploring Diamond Head State Monument, shopping at the Ala Moana Center, or marveling at the Kaka’ako Pow Wow street art, grab a refreshingly crisp pint of craft beer at one of these Honolulu beer staples.
Waikiki Brewing Company
The very first craft brewery in our neighborhood is located inside Cheeseburger Waikiki, an unpretentious cantina that slings juicy burgers and mouthwatering onion rings. Years ago, restaurant manager Joe Lorenzen suggested converting their unutilized banquet hall into a small brewery – that suggestion became a reality in 2015. This small establishment is a short stroll from Prince Waikiki, the Hawaii Convention Center, and Kahanamoku Beach. The “Hana Hou Hefe,” a fruity, cloudy hefeweizen is perfect on a warm, sunny afternoon. Hopheads with a hankering for a West Coast IPA should try a pint of “Skinny Jeans,” a piney, lightly-malted tropical ale sitting at 6% ABV.
We highly encourage tourists to visit Honolulu’s lively, up-and-coming arts district, Kaka’ako. Lush with street murals, unique dining options, and nightly entertainment, Kaka’ako is also slowly transforming into Hawaii’s premier craft beer scene. Honolulu BeerWorks, widely considered Hawaii’s crème de la crème craft brewery, operates out of an open-air structure with baby blue metal-siding in the heart of Kaka’ako. Start by ordering a six-beer flight and a pastrami Reuben or a Caesar salad with housemade IPA dressing. Their custom-built seven-barrel system provides enough beer for nine different taps, including the dank Hop Island IPA, the sweet Pia Mahi‘ai Honey Citrus Saison, and the roasty South Shore Stout.
Beer Lab HI
Despite earning the best beer ratings among craft beer aficionados on Untappd, Beer Lab HI is often overlooked because of its quiet University Avenue location. Beer Lab is only a 1.7-mile cab ride from Prince Waikiki and within walking distance of the University of Hawaii, but tourists simply don’t frequent this neighborhood as often as Waikiki and Kaka’ako. Their skinny taproom is a dimly-lit space with local art, rope lights, and iron-framed beer flights. Beer Lab rarely makes the same batch of beer twice, but this creative group of brewers specializes in juicy New England-style IPAs, fruity saisons, and the occasional blonde, stout, or porter.
