Advisory

As of the 5:00 a.m. HST CPHC/NHC advisory today, Saturday, August 22, Tropical Storm Moke has strengthened somewhat, but the current forecast continues to keep its center south of the Hawaiian Islands.

Moke is 470miles SE of Hilo, moving west-northwest at about 12 mph. Maximum sustained winds have increased to approximately 50 mph (45 kt). CPHC expects some additional strengthening today, followed by gradual weakening Sunday as increasing wind shear affects the system.

The current track is considerably south of Oʻahu, and there are no tropical storm watches or warnings for the Hawaiian Islands at this time. However, Moke will still affect our weather as it passes south of the state this weekend.

NWS Honolulu expects trade winds to strengthen today, with periods of rain spreading across the islands late tonight through Monday. The heaviest rainfall is expected along windward and southeast-facing slopes, although showers can reach leeward locations as well.
